| Artist's Statement: |
| Interestingly, I have had one particular reading of the work that conveyed that the Darkworld Project is not challenging the media spectacle per se but it is a direct and systematic symptom of it. It is the afterglow of the world we have created. This is my 'Darkworld' a world that has formed as a result of a surveillance society where identity is constructed by the mass media, deranged by a technological frenzy of indifference. With this in mind these human figures that haunt the vestiges of my disparate urban landscapes wander aimlessly in a world of no meaning; in and out of the structures that we have built, that WE are responsible for. My aim is to turn around a rather stale and looped art scene ever caught in the web of appropriation and repetition. This "scene" is totally market driven with the pondering blue chip art galleries pushing the latest in hype, investing heavily in new upcoming young artists. I am sorry but this is not good enough. The art that they so frequently praise will not stand up in two or three hundred years time. Having said that it is only for the select few but not by any means the best. If we dont encounter all? art of excellence then we will be unable to have claimed we have experienced the best art on the planet at this time period. This is presently measured through the mainstream media (high profile art magazines, TV, Turner prize etc). |
